TOUR CODE 009 - RWENZORI MOUNTAINS HIKING/CLIMBING - 9 DAYS
A trip to Rwenzori Mountains N.P., which sits on the border with The Congo (Zaire), provides a unique opportunity to visit “The Mountains of the Moon,” legendary home of Rider Haggard’s She. There are dense forests, eerie misty slopes, crater lakes and giant vegetation. Above soar snowy peaks – some of the highest in Africa. We cater to all levels of climbers, offering you the chance to hike up the intermediate slopes or climb to the summits.
The Rwenzori Mountaineering Service provides basic equipment as well as experienced guides and porters, but the enthusiast is welcome to bring his own specialized equipment.
DAY 1: A scenic day of traveling from Kampala takes you across the equator and through the Rift Valley to your overnight stop at Kasese. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Margharita.
DAY 2-7: Assisted by guides and porters, climb up to one of the seven intermediate stages or further to various peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains. On the way find a plethora of diversity in the surrounding vegetation, the chance of spotting some wild animals and the experience of breathtaking views. The route chosen for you will be based on your skills and experience. Camp cooks will prepare meals and accommodation is in mountain huts or tents.
DAY 8: Return to Kampala via Mbarara, passing through small villages with their stunning Ankole cattle and numerous Matoke plantations, arriving late afternoon.
NB. This package can be reduced to 6 days (Tour Code: 008) or extended to10 or 12 days depending on how high one would like to climb. If you are a serious climber, Baker (15,889 ft.) and Margherita (16,763 ft.) peaks are worth the visit. There are numerous rugged cliffs. Rock climbing equipment is needed.
A note for climbers: We recommend you bring your favorite climbing equipment, stout walking shoes, warm clothes for the cold nights, sleeping bags, sun-glasses, sun-screen, etc. Please request full details when booking.
